Driving Tips: Learn How to Drive Like a Pro

Driving is a skill that’s learned through experience. There’s no way to become a good driver without getting behind the driver’s seat and hitting the road. Although it might be a bit scary at first, once you spend more time on the road, you’ll become more used to it.

It’s also important to note that driving is a never-ending learning experience. Even the most experienced drivers continue to learn as they go. There’s always a new situation or event that could happen that you’ll learn from.

If you want to learn how to drive or improve your driving skills, then continue reading below. In this guide, we’ll go over a few driving tips you’ll want to know about!

Practice in an Empty Space

When first starting out, be sure to practice in an empty space such as a parking lot early in the morning or late at night. It’s ideal to have someone with you when you’re first learning. If you only have a permit, then you’ll need to have someone over the age of 21 with a driver’s license to practice driving.

Even after you get your driver’s license, you can still practice in an empty parking lot on your own. This might help you feel more comfortable driving alone. Try to imagine different scenarios and act them out.

You can practice parallel parking, 3-point turns, reversing, and more.

Know All the Signs

One part of passing a driving test is knowing about all the different traffic signs and signals. Even if you were able to pass the test, there are most likely still some signs you’re not sure of. The last thing you want to do is find yourself in the middle of traffic not understanding what a sign is telling you.

Before you start driving on the roads, do be sure to review all of the different road signs and know what they mean. This will help keep you and other drivers safe.

Remove All Distractions

Distracted driving is one of the most common causes of car accidents. When you have a variety of distractions in your vehicle, it makes it easy to begin distracted and cause an accident. One of the best things you can do to become a better driver is to remove all distractions from the inside of your car.

Your cell phone is one of the biggest distractions you can have. Place the cell phone in your glove compartment or place it on silent to prevent it from distracting you. Refrain from eating, doing makeup, and other things while driving as well.

Pull Over to Complete Tasks

There will be times when you need to complete different tasks while driving. If there does come a time when you need to do something, then be sure to pull the car over and put it in the park. Find a safe place to pull over before doing so.

Once you pull the car over, you can then complete any tasks. When done, you can then get back onto the road. Although it seems like an inconvenience, it’s much more convenient to stop for a few minutes than to find yourself involved in a car accident.

Keep a Car Length’s Distance

While driving, you never want to get too close to the vehicle in front of you. Even if the vehicle’s moving slower than the speed limit, you don’t want to drive too closely. If the vehicle were to stop at any moment, you could find yourself in a fender bender.

If the car behind isn’t paying attention and hits you, then your car could hit the car in front of you if you’re too close. For these reasons, it’s always best to keep a car length’s distance between you and other vehicles at all times.

Learn to Drive Defensively

Driving defensively will help you from being involved in accidents that aren’t your fault. No matter how good of a driver you are, you can only control your vehicle. You can’t control other drivers on the road.

For this reason, you need to drive as if all other drivers aren’t paying attention. Keep your eye on other drivers and if you see something unusual such as swerving or contact braking, then be sure to avoid that vehicle when possible. You should also keep in mind that there are defensive driving courses you can take to be TDLR approved and approved for other states’ driver’s licenses as well.

Always Check Your Blind Spots

Another way to prevent car accidents is to always check your blind spot before changing lanes. Use your rearview mirrors to make sure the lane is free, but then double-check your blind spot as well. You can’t always see cars in your blind spot simply by using your mirrors.

You may need to lean a bit forward while checking your mirrors to check that blind spot. Once the coast is clear, you can then switch lanes. Be sure to always use your turn signals as well.

Using your turn signals lets other drivers know you’re preparing to switch lanes or turn. They can then ensure they move out of the way by speeding up or slowing down.
